The Happiness Road is the name given to a section of National Highway 4C, starting from Kilometer Zero in Ha Giang City and stretching nearly 200 kilometers through the highland districts of Yen Minh, Quan Ba, Dong Van, and Meo Vac. The road runs across the Dong Van Karst Plateau and passes over the famous Ma Pi Leng Pass.

Construction of the road began in September 1959 and was completed in March 1965. From the groundbreaking stage to its completion, tens of thousands of youth volunteers and civilian workers from six Viet Bac provinces worked tirelessly under extremely harsh conditions. With primitive tools, difficult terrain, and a severe climate, they carved the road out of rock to connect the remote high mountains with the lowland regions.
This remarkable achievement has since been regarded as a miracle and named the Happiness Road — a place where rock and stone were transformed into “flowers,” bringing hope and better living conditions to the local people.

Today, the Happiness Road is considered one of the most spectacular roads in Vietnam, closely associated with iconic landmarks such as Ma Pi Leng Pass, Bac Sum Slope, Tham Ma Slope, Quan Ba Heaven’s Gate, and the White Cliff. No matter the season, this legendary route always offers travelers unforgettable experiences.

With each passing season, the scenery along the road continuously amazes visitors. The Happiness Road of Ha Giang seems to charm travelers with its ever-changing beauty throughout the year.
In winter, the road is wrapped in shades of gray and black from clouds and mist, creating a mysterious atmosphere. In summer, the first rays of sunrise illuminate the route, making it glow with warmth and vitality. From September to November, the road becomes especially captivating with the golden color of ripe rice fields and the pink and purple hues of buckwheat flowers.
While exploring the Happiness Road and discovering Ha Giang, travelers can also visit many famous attractions such as Ma Pi Leng Pass, the Lung Cu Flag Tower, and Pao’s House, which reflect the unique cultural identity of the region. Notably, Ma Pi Leng Pass lies directly along the Happiness Road. Upon reaching its summit, visitors are rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view of the Dong Van Karst Plateau stretching out before their eyes.
